The best book tracker apps in India

Most reading apps let the app store convert a US price and land at five thousand rupees a year. This is a comparison of what they actually cost here, and which ones work on the phones Indians actually use.

The short answer

For Indian readers the best book tracker in 2026 is the one that is free where it matters and priced in rupees where it is not. Pensovo tracks unlimited books with streaks, notes and page capture for free, works offline on Android, and prices Premium at ₹499 for the first year (₹899 list) rather than auto-converting a dollar price. Bookmory is a strong free offline journal with ads. StoryGraph and Goodreads are free but bill in dollars if you pay. Bookly is ₹2,249 a year, and Margins — the iPhone favourite — costs ₹5,900 a year and arrived on Android only in September 2026.

  • Free with no ads and no book cap: Pensovo, StoryGraph, Goodreads.
  • Priced for India: Pensovo (₹499/₹899). Everything else is a converted dollar price.
  • Works offline on Android: Pensovo, Bookmory.
  • Any Indian book, instantly: Pensovo lets you type a title the catalogue has never heard of; Margins users report waiting months for missing books.

Why does pricing go wrong for Indian readers?

Apple and Google convert a developer's home-market price into every storefront using exchange rates and tax, not purchasing power. A $59.99 subscription becomes ₹5,900 unless the developer goes in and sets an Indian price by hand — and most small app makers never do. So the same app that is a reasonable Netflix-sized purchase in Ohio costs a Bengaluru reader more than a year of Kuku FM, whose 10 million paying subscribers at ₹1,499 a year are the clearest evidence of what Indian readers will actually pay for.

What matters more in India than elsewhere?

Android first

Roughly 95% of Indian smartphones run Android. Book Tracker, Reading List and Leio — three of the best private trackers — are Apple-only and do not appear here at all. Margins was iPhone-only until this month. The realistic Android field is Pensovo, Bookmory, StoryGraph, Goodreads and Bookly.

Offline and data-light

A tracker should work in a lift, on a train and on a patchy connection. Bookmory stores everything locally. Pensovo works signed out, recognises page photos on the phone, and syncs when a connection returns.

Indian books in the catalogue

Every tracker's catalogue is built on Western metadata sources, so regional-language titles, Indian editions and smaller publishers are often missing. The question is what happens then. Margins users report waiting months for missing books. Pensovo lets you type the title and it is on your shelf immediately, with the catalogue team adding the real cover later.

Payment without a credit card

Only about 8% of Indians hold a credit card, so card-gated free trials fail here. Both app stores take UPI and carrier billing for subscriptions; a tracker whose free tier is the whole product, with a paid layer you can try without a card, fits the market better than a seven-day trial.

Which should you pick?

  • You read paper books and want a free tracker with a streak — Pensovo.
  • You want an offline journal and can live with ads — Bookmory.
  • You want charts and do not mind paying in dollars — StoryGraph.
  • Your friends and reviews are there — Goodreads, with a private tracker alongside it.

Common questions

Which book tracker app is free in India?

Pensovo, StoryGraph and Goodreads are free without a book cap or ads on the tracking itself; Bookmory is free with ads; Bookly is free for ten books. Pensovo's paid layer is priced in rupees; StoryGraph's is billed in dollars.

How much does Margins cost in India?

₹599 a month or ₹5,900 a year on the Indian App Store as of September 2026 — an auto-converted US price. The Android version launched in September 2026 as a beta.

Is there a Goodreads alternative in India?

Yes. Pensovo and Bookmory both work offline on Android with no feed; StoryGraph is the closest like-for-like replacement with a social layer.

Can I add Indian books that are not in the catalogue?

In Pensovo, yes — type the title and it is yours immediately. Most other trackers make you request the book and wait.

Do these apps work in Hindi or other Indian languages?

The interfaces are in English. You can add books with titles in any script in Pensovo and Bookmory; catalogue coverage of regional-language titles is thin everywhere.

Can I pay with UPI?

Yes, through Google Play and the App Store's Indian payment options. No app here requires a credit card.
