How to export Kindle highlights

Your Kindle highlights live in three places and none of them is a folder you can open. Four routes get them out, and which one you need depends on where the book came from.

Four routes to export Kindle highlights: My Clippings.txt, Export Notebook, the web notebook, and parsing tools
Start with the first one. It is the only route that includes books you did not buy from Amazon.

The short answer

There are four free ways to get highlights off a Kindle. My Clippings.txt: plug the Kindle into a computer by USB and copy the file from the documents folder — every highlight and note from every book, including sideloaded ones, as plain text. Export Notebook: on the device, open a book's notebook and export it by email as PDF or CSV — one book at a time, store-bought books only. read.amazon.com/notebook: all store-bought highlights in a browser, ready to copy. A parsing tool such as Bookcision or clippings.io to turn any of the above into clean text with the location, date and book attached. Whatever route, keep the location or page with each highlight.

  • Sideloaded books: only My Clippings.txt has them.
  • Store books: all four routes work; the web notebook is fastest for many books.
  • Locations, not pages, in most exports. About 16 locations to a print page.
  • Export regularly. My Clippings.txt is the only copy Amazon does not control.

Where do Kindle highlights live?

In three places. On the device, every highlight is appended to a plain text file called My Clippings.txt, whether the book came from the store or was sideloaded. For store-bought books, highlights also sync to your Amazon account and appear in the web notebook and in the Kindle app. For sideloaded books — PDFs, EPUBs you converted, documents you emailed — the text file is the only record.

1. My Clippings.txt over USB

  1. Connect the Kindle to a computer with a USB cable and, if asked on the device, allow the connection.
  2. Open the Kindle drive and the documents folder.
  3. Copy My Clippings.txt to your computer.
  4. Open it in any text editor. Each entry has the book title and author, the type (highlight, note, bookmark), the location and page if known, the date, and the text, separated by a line of equals signs.

The file never shrinks — deleting a highlight on the device does not remove it from the file — so it is also a history. Its weakness is formatting: a parsing tool turns it into one clean document per book.

2. Export Notebook on the device

  1. Open the book and tap the top of the screen for the toolbar.
  2. Open the notebook (the icon that looks like a page with lines).
  3. Tap Export Notebook, choose PDF or CSV, and enter an email address.

Amazon emails the file. Some publishers cap exported highlights at a share of the book, so a heavily highlighted title may come back incomplete; the text file has no such cap.

3. The Kindle web notebook

Sign in at read.amazon.com/notebook. Every store-bought book with highlights is listed on the left; click one to see them all with locations. Copy and paste into wherever your notes live. For many books at once, Bookcision (a free bookmarklet) exports the page you are viewing as text, JSON or XML.

4. Parsing tools

clippings.io uploads My Clippings.txt and returns organised, per-book exports. Readwise imports from the web notebook or the file, resurfaces highlights daily, and forwards to Notion, Obsidian and others, for a subscription. For most readers the free routes are enough; the tools earn their place when you highlight hundreds of passages a month.

Locations, pages and what gets lost

Most exports carry Kindle locations rather than page numbers. A location is about 128 bytes of text, roughly 16 to a print page, so divide by 16 for a rough page or use percent × the print page count. Notes you typed attach to their highlight in the text file and the notebook export. What is lost in every route: the highlight colour (in the text file) and, for sideloaded books, everything unless you use route one.

In Pensovo Highlights on paper books come from photographing the page; a Kindle clipping can be pasted into a note at the page today, and a My Clippings import is on the roadmap so Kindle highlights sit beside the paper ones.

Common questions

Where are Kindle highlights stored?

On the device in My Clippings.txt (all books), and for store-bought books also in your Amazon account, visible at read.amazon.com/notebook and in the Kindle app.

Why is My Clippings.txt missing?

It is created when you make your first highlight, so a new Kindle will not have one. If you have highlighted and it is still missing, check the documents folder and that the device is mounted as a drive.

Can I export Kindle highlights to PDF?

Yes — Export Notebook on the device emails a PDF for one book. For many books, export the text file or use the web notebook and print to PDF.

Can I export highlights from sideloaded books?

Only through My Clippings.txt over USB. Sideloaded books do not sync to the web notebook.

Why are some of my exported highlights missing?

Publishers can cap how much of a book can be exported through the notebook export. My Clippings.txt has no cap.

How do I convert Kindle locations to pages?

Roughly 16 locations per print page, or percent complete times the print edition's page count.
