What should a reading log include?
| Field | Why | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Date | Turns the log into a habit record and a calendar | 12 Aug |
| Book | Write the full title the first time so you can find it | Piranesi |
| Page (or minutes) | Position and pace; what makes streaks and finish estimates possible | p. 142 |
| One line | The thing you will be glad you wrote next year | “The statues are the point.” |
Optional, only if you will fill them in: format (paper, ebook, audio), a rating on finishing, where the book came from. Skip separate start and finish dates; they fall out of the daily entries. A template with twenty columns is a template abandoned in February.
Download the template
- Printable PDF: reading-tracker-printable.pdf — one page per month, 31 day boxes across the top, a ten-row book log with dates and pages, a one-line column and month totals. A4 and US Letter.
- Spreadsheet: book-tracker-template.csv — one row per book with title, author, pages, started, finished, rating and one line. Import into Google Sheets with File → Import.
The printable is a log of days and books; the spreadsheet is a log of books. If you want a log of sessions — pages tonight, minutes today — that is what apps are for.
How to fill it in so it survives
- Log when you close the book, not the next morning. Attach it to the act of stopping.
- Keep the pen with the page (or the app on the home screen). Most missed entries are a missing pen.
- Write the page, not the pages read. Position is what you need tomorrow; the maths can wait.
- One line only when you have one. An empty line is fine; a forced one is a chore.
- Do not backfill. A blank date is information about that date.
Reading log or reading journal?
A log records behaviour — date, book, page — and takes ten seconds. A journal records thought and takes ten minutes, when you have something to say. Keep them separate or you will keep neither: the log daily and tiny, the journal optional and generous. The journal prompts guide has forty places to start.
When should you move the log to an app?
Three signals: you want to know what you read in a given month and cannot find out without leafing through pages; you are juggling more than one book and the paper has become arrows; or you want the streak and the calendar drawn for you. An app is the same four fields captured in two taps, with the sessions kept. Keep the paper as an object.
Common questions
What is the best reading log template for adults?
The plainest one: date, book, page, one line. The printable and spreadsheet above are exactly that; decorated templates are lovely and get abandoned.
Is there a free printable reading log?
Yes — the PDF above, one page per month in A4 and US Letter, free for personal use.
Should a reading log have a rating column?
Optional. If you rate, do it the moment you finish, in halves. A one-line note ages better than a number.
How do I log audiobooks in a reading log?
Minutes or percent instead of a page. A listening day is a reading day; cross the box.
Reading log or reading journal — which do I need?
The log, first and daily. The journal is optional and only when you have something to say. Merging them kills both.
When should I switch from paper to an app?
When you cannot find last March, when the arrows between books get confusing, or when you want the streak counted for you. Keep the paper as the archive.
